Go ahead. Ask me anything.

This is now an open comment thread!

If you have any questions about the Elemental Series (“OMG who is that hottie on the cover of Breathless?!?!!!1) or about writing (“How do I write a book without, ya’know, actually WRITING it?”) or about boring old me (“What do you MEAN, you still haven’t read Harry Potter?”), please throw a question my way in the comments, and I’ll answer it here, as well as add your question to my FAQ thread.

  1. Oh, dear. I don’t know what to ask! I guess I would like to know how far you are planning to take the series. Also…have you actually gotten to meet those guys on the covers? Because they are gorgeous!

    • I do. I’m actually contracted to write two more books in the Elemental Series, Nick’s book and then Michael’s book, and then a third book to launch a new series. I have lots of ideas. I have two other books that I tinker with when I have time. One is an older teen murder mystery, and the other is a high fantasy novel. Who knows? By the time the Elemental series is done, I might have another idea altogether. We’ll see. But this definitely isn’t the end of the road for me. πŸ™‚

  2. Ooo, I have one!

I find most YA protagonists act and think too maturely for their age, but yours are always so believably teenage-esque. HOW do you not only remember what it was like to be a teenager, but do so well at writing from a teen GUY’S perspective?????

    • True story: I went to an all-girls’ high school, so I don’t even have firsthand experience of what guys are like at that age.

I don’t know. I guess I just let my characters be themselves. They seem to leap into my head fully formed. I just need to let them talk to me. Some characters take a little longer to tell me their story (like Kate in Spirit), but some characters just talk to me from the first time I type their name (like Nick in Breathless).

  3. No question just a comment to say I love your books and would like a chance to win. Would a “Go Ravens” help my chances?? LMAO!

  4. OMG OMG OMG.
    BRIGID.
OMG who is that hottie on the cover of Breathless?!?!!!1

Do you have a home address Grayson can stalk him at?

Also: WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU HAVEN’T READ HARRY POTTER? SHEESH, WOMAN! πŸ˜›

Err… something original… hmm… What did you have for breakfast this morning?

    *grins*

      • That it does πŸ™ Say…. If I was to buy a BUCKETLOAD of your books, how many would it take to fund this trip? I’ll stuff them in kangaroo pouches and they’ll make the news and all the publicity will sell even more!!

          • Better yet – I’ll SEND you one! You non-Aussies don’t know this but I’ll let you in on a little secret. They’re like owls or carrier pidgeons. You tell them where to go, they’ll hop across oceans to pass on messages you tie around their elbows with little bows πŸ˜€

  5. Layne’s former best friend is a real bitch… My name has been DEFILLED!!! But it’s okay I’ll prove to you that the name Kara is not a mean girl name. P.S. What happenes to Gabriel and Layne? Or do we find that out in another book?… and all I have to say about Nick is HOLY CRAP! and *girl scream!*. Yes, I got all that from the “back” of the book. So excited for April!

    • I always feel badly when I name the nasty characters! I know someone out there has the same name and they’re cursing me. πŸ™‚ Believe it or not, in the first book, “Monica Lawrence” used to be “Hannah Lawrence.” My agent had an intern named Hannah who said she loved the books but hated the “mean girl” character. I said if she could give me a better “mean girl” name, I’d use it. And Monica was born…

There’s more of Layne and Gabriel in Spirit, but not a whole lot. The fourth book, tentatively titled Siege, will have more of Layne and Gabriel.

And I’m so glad you’re excited for Nick’s story!! I won’t lie — I’ve been very nervous about how that’s going to go over.

  6. If you could live anywhere, real or fictional, where would it be?

Thanks for the contest! I can’t wait for BREATHLESS!!!

  7. Okay, here goes. Going by the blurb for Breathless, is Nick batting for the other team? Or am I just totally and completely off on that?

    • You’re not completely off. πŸ™‚ I’m working on Nick’s full length novel right now, and the guy is kind of breaking my heart, because he’s finally admitted it to himself, but he feels like he can’t tell his family.

  8. How do you keep your characters so full and complete? Especially with have such a large ensemble of characters you would think some would fall flat and static but everyone is so unique and round and comes to life off the page. Tell me your secrets please!!!

    • Oh, thank you so much!! I wish I knew how to answer this question! There’s a scene in Spirit with 11 people in it (Michael, Chris, Gabriel, Nicholas, Hunter, Becca, Layne, Quinn, Simon, Hannah, and James) and I remember sitting at Starbucks thinking, “How the hell am I going to pull THIS off?”

All of my characters have a reason for being there, and they all have their own motivations and feelings and goals. No one is there solely for the purpose of moving someone else forward. I sometimes have to remind myself of that if characters aren’t coming around and doing what I need them to do.

    • Well, they won’t be officially be printed by Kensington. They’ll be printed and bound by my local Kinkos just for this contest. πŸ™‚

Oh, Gabriel. I did a lot of research into fire. I spent hours talking to the local fire chief. (Here’s a post about that.) I watched a lot of YouTube videos about walking into burning houses. But beyond that, I really identify with Gabriel. He feels responsible for everyone, but at the same time, he’s constantly worried he’s letting them down. As a mom, it’s not hard to build from that type of emotion.

      • Oh, and you had me all excited thinking it was going to be something like the Delirium e-book omnibus coming out, lol.

Not that I don’t already have the ebooks on my nook, but the completionist in me….! LOL

Ooh, YouTube videos, there’s a good thought! I think I told you before that I wanted to research fire for something myself, but didn’t really know where to start. We used to have a retired fireman come in all the time that I wanted to talk to, but I haven’t seen him in a while. Hopefully everything is all right with him!

So far, Gabriel is my favorite. His personality really pulled me it!

  9. I don’t have a question but I wanted to say that I love your books and I’d love the chance to have all them of them as hard copies. E-books are good but nothing beats the feel of a real book in your hands

  10. Question ok, lets see ok how did you get the idea for the elemental series and was it hard to pick a name and personality for the characters? Also how did you first become so involved with books that you decided to write and then get the books published?
Ok one last question how do you get a book published, I love writing and reading and one day I would love to get a series or two published is it a long process and how do you get a publishing company to read you material for publishing worldwide. thank you for this chance to ask questions.

    • Wow, lots of questions!

I’ve answered the one about coming up with the idea a couple times now, so I’ll let you scroll for that one. πŸ˜› As for personalities, sometimes the characters just come to me fully formed, and sometimes I have to mess with them for a while and see what they show me. When I do school visits, I like to tell kids to light a character on fire and see how they react. I tend to like more traditional names, but sometimes I’ll go out on a limb. Hunter’s name was originally Garrett, but it was too close to Gabriel when they started becoming friends, and I had to change it.

For writing advice, check out the “Other Stuff” tab up there ^^^. I’ve don’t lots of posts on writing. If you have any specific questions, let me know, and I’m happy to help if I can. I love hearing form other writers! Good luck with your stuff! <3

  11. Hi Brigid! Love your work!

There are a lot of movies/TV shows/ and books related to the idea of the elements and people controlling them. Did you worry about this when writing your series?

Just for the record, I think your characters are quite original. πŸ˜‰ Keep up the awesome work!

    • Thank you so much! I’m so glad you’re enjoying the books!

Actually, when I started the series, I didn’t know of any books about people controlling the elements, and as far as television shows, I only knew of Avatar: the Last Airbender. (I’ve never watched the show, but I’ve seen a few people call Storm “Avatar Fanfic” which makes me smile because I’ve never seen it.) Are there lots of books and TV shows out there? What am I missing? I’d love to read/watch!

      • Jennifer Armentrout’s Lux Series is pretty freaking awesome. It’s a pretty original idea that has me on the edge if my seat waiting for the next book to come out. I don’t want to spoil it by telling you too much so go look at the blurb!!!!

  12. I love this series! It was a great Christmas break activity. I especially love the unconventional romance in Spark. I can relate to Layne so much better than Becca.

My question: Will it be possible for Hunter and Becca to have the ability of controlling the elements since they are direct descendants of the powerful Guides? I know the Merrick brothers came into their powers at a younger age, but I wasn’t sure if it works differently for the Spirit elementals.

    Thanks, and happy writing! πŸ˜€

    • Yup, they definitely have the ability, and you’ll see Hunter struggle with that in Spirit.

And thank you so much for your kind words! I’m so glad you’re enjoying the series!! <3 <3 <3

      • I have one more question. You mentioned that you have an idea for a high fantasy novel. What are some of your favorite fantasy series?

I would highly recommend the work of Patrick Rothfuss if you haven’t read him already (The Kingkiller Chronicles). His writing is so melodic, not a word out of place. I find his books great for curing a little writer’s block!

It’s so awesome that you’re available to your fans. I used to think that the authors of my favorite books were nothing more than mythical creatures! πŸ™‚

        • I used to think that, too!! Once Veronica Rossi tweeted me and I just about fell off my couch. I love talking to people, so it’s so exciting to me that I’ve been published in an era where it’s so easy for writers and readers to communicate.

Honestly, I don’t read a whole lot of high fantasy, so I can’t recommend much. I did enjoy Sarah Maas’ Queen of Glass novel. I probably shouldn’t be writing anything in a high fantasy vein, LOL. πŸ˜›

  13. I don’t have a question, most of my questions have been answered in the comments already πŸ˜€ But, I want a chance to win!!!

  14. Hi there!

My question: what made you decide to write about elementals than other paranormal genres out there? And did you have to do any research for your novel, or was it mostly all imagination? I love your series and can’t wait for the next one!

    • Thank you so much!! I’m so glad you’re enjoying the series!

I actually had originally written about four brothers who were vampires. I wrote that book when I was in high school, and then I wrote it again in my twenties, right when Twilight was taking off. I learned pretty quickly that I couldn’t land an agent for a vampire novel, so I went back to the drawing board. I wrote a different book about Greek mythology, and while that landed an agent, it didn’t sell. I just couldn’t get those brothers out of my head. So I started thinking of different things that went with the number four. Elements just sounded fun, so I went with it.

While most of my books come straight out of my imagination, I do a ton of research, especially for Spark: I talked to firemen and policemen and attorneys, and watched a lot of YouTube videos about what it was like to walk into a burning home. I think I sent over 100 emails to our local fire chief, and he happily responded to each one. He probably thinks I’m nuts.

  15. I felt like during Spark, Michael had a bigger part in the story than he did in Storm and I absolutely loved getting to know him and fall in love with him as much as i did with the other guys. So my question is, will he be present in Spirit as well, because I need to know what happens with Hannah. Or do I have to wait till his book comes out?

      • Awesome πŸ™‚ and I have one more. Do you know if your books be available as ebooks on the iTunes bookstore? I know they’re up on Amazon and other sites but I was just wondering if in the near future I can buy them from iTunes πŸ™‚

  16. Hi Brigid!

    Love your work.

My question: you mentioned above you would CHOOSE the fire or air element – but if you were an Elemental yourself, is that what your personality would be the closest to?

  17. Okay, so my question’s probably a bit naff and 100% selfish, but … what are the chances of you being at BEA 2014 so I can stalk–I mean hunt–I mean come find where you’re at and squeal like a moro–I mean, tell you how cool your books are?
    πŸ˜‰

  18. Hmm . . . Well, I’ve got a few questions that I’ve been brooding over, so this is kind of the coolest thing ever. c:

Which book do you think had the most the most emotional impact on yourself? Did you ever have a pet when you were younger, or now? Did it have an impact on your writing? And, of course, Coke or Pepsi?

    Thank you!

    • Spirit definitely took a lot out of me. Hunter has no one to lean on, and it’s bleak living in his head sometimes. He has a very skewed view of the world. I was happy to be done with his book.

I’ve always had pets: dogs, cats, horses. I don’t know if they’ve had an impact on my writing, but they’ve definitely made me a happier human being!

Pepsi!! (But my husband would make a disgusted face and say Coke!)

  19. Brigid, what do you do when your editor wants you to cut a favorite scene that you have written and absolutely love? Do you argue back and forth or do you kiss it goodbye?
    Thanks,
    Nicole

    • My editor wanted to cut the scene between Becca, Michael, and Becca’s mom in Storm. It’s one of my favorite scenes in the book (and the first time the reader gets to see a vulnerable side of Michael), so we talked it out. She explained that it was slowing the pacing, and I explained why I wanted to keep it. I offered to revise, and in doing so, I cut the scene in half. It worked much better.

As far as working with an editor goes, we’re all on the same side. I know she wants the book to succeed as much as I do. So there’s never a heavy-handed YOU MUST CUT THIS SCENE kind of discussion. Any time she wants changes, I respect her opinion and I hear her out. She asked for a significant revision at the end of Spirit (basically leading to me rewriting the entire last 25% of the book), but she was absolutely right, and I was happy to do it.

        • Nope, that was all my decision. When I first told her that’s what I was planning, she said something like, “Well…I don’t know how that’s going to work…” So I knew I had to really work to make it fit the story. (And I think I did. The book really isn’t about Hunter finding love. It’s about him finding HIMSELF.)

  20. BRIGID! Awesome cover! First time I’ve seen it! Please excuse me while I get excited… EEEEEEE!

    Ok, so my question:

Because of his age, will Michael’s book be published/marketed as New Adult rather than YA? And if so, because of his age, will there be mature content? Not because I’m a pervert or anything, just wondering if the feel of the book will be slightly older if it is published as New Adult. πŸ˜€

    • I’m not sure about the marketing side of things (that’s up to my publisher), but I’ve definitely been “strongly encouraged” to let the stories run in a more New Adult vein. I can say that Spirit is definitely the more racy and violent of the books so far, and Nick’s book seems like it’s headed in that same direction.

  21. Absolutely loving this series! And thanks so much for the giveaway. =)

Which novel or novella has been the easiest to write, whether it be that the character came the most natural to you, or the plot seemed to fall into place, etc..?

  22. So, Storm was mostly from Becca’s POV while occasionally switching to Chris’s. Spark switched it up and was from Gabriel’s POV most of the time. The novellas were Merrick-centric as well, with the girls being the supporting voices. Was this a conscious choice of yours? What led to the switch? What can we expect from your upcoming books? I feel like Chris was cheated out of his own book! πŸ˜›

    • It’s funny how it all happened. When I first started writing Storm, it was entirely from Becca’s POV, and I envisioned a trilogy where the story was all about her relationship with Chris and Hunter. But the longer I kept writing, I started to realize that I was missing the chance to tell the stories of ALL the brothers! As Storm was really more about Becca’s journey, you’re right, it’s not as much about Chris’s side of things.

  23. Hey, Ms. Kemmerer!

What a cool contest–I hope I can win!

My question is this: how long (word-count wise) are the first two books in the Elemental series? πŸ˜€

    Thanks!
    Rebecca

    • Ack! Ms. Kemmerer is my mother-in-law. Please, call me Brigid. πŸ™‚

Storm was 105,000. Spark was just under 100,000. Spirit has the shortest word count, at 85,000, but it’s the same number of pages somehow. I think it’s because there’s a ton of text messaging.

      • Ha! Sorry, Brigid. πŸ˜›

Wow, those are long books! I can’t wait for Spirit. Anything to get more of the Merricks. πŸ˜‰

        Thanks for the reply!

  24. I love your books so much!!!! Including me in the family there are four sisters. I end up comparing them to the books and it works out pretty well. ANYWHO. My question is…How did you end up choosing the titles for the books Storm, Spark, and Spirit? They all start with an “s”. I can’t wait for more books in this series and the new ones!!!!!! I absolutely LOVE the covers, pretty wicked. Oh, and i am DETERMINED to get my friends to read these AMAZING books before summer!!!!! πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

    • Thank you so much!!! πŸ™‚

Titles. Okay, so originally Storm was “Elemental,” and Spark was going to be “Incendiary.” Those titles were determined to be too sci-fi, and my publisher wanted something shorter and more catchy. Storm, Spark, and Spirit were born.

(Funny story: my editor also edits an erotica line for Kensington. She joked to me that it would be so much easier if the stories were erotica, because she could just call them Wet, Hot, and Hard, respectively. :-P)

  25. HIIIIIIIIIII BRIGID!!!!!!!!!! This post showed up first thing in my inbox this morning, in an email – and what a nice first thing to see!!!! I think it’s great that you are opening up your brain for us!!!!! So, my question: WHEN IS YOUR NEXT EVENT IN BALTIMORE?!?!!? lol. I’m joking. Kind of. I am so mad that I missed the Ellicott City event for Spark, and I haven’t been able to make it to any of the events at the BAM in Westminister. BUT. For Spirit. I will graduate from high school by then. So, I can actually come to book events on weekdays!!!! And weekends!!! Without homework!!!! πŸ˜€

    Anyway.

    My question (questions?):

Reviews. Some authors hate them, and some authors love them. What are your stance on reviews, as an author? Do you read any? If the review was written by someone you trusted or knew well? How about as a reader? Do you read reviews of books that you want to read? Do you think, as a reader, that reviews are helpful, or would you rather read the book and make your own judgments BEFORE reading someone else’s opinion?

Also, because my brain can’t come up with an answer to this question: did you have a blog tour for Spark? Storm? Will there be one for Spirit? Do you thinking that blogging promotion is necessary, or vital, to a book’s overall promotion and success?

And finally: you’re obviously extremely busy with the Elemental! With one book awaiting publication and two more to come, do you plan on keeping up with your other projects (I think you once told me something about a high fantasy?), so some of the books will be published simulatneously (in the same year, within months, etc.), or do you think that with your writing schedule, you’ll finish the Elemental series, and THEN work on completing other books and working to get them published? I hope that made sense lol. And I’m SO not trying to criticize – I hope it didn’t come off sounding like that!

Thank you SO MUCH for this awesome question and answers post!!!! Such a great idea!!!! And thank you for writing, because your books are some of my favorite!!! You’re definitely one of my favorite authors – especially since you’re in MD as well!!! There aren’t that many YA authors in MD that have great books. And sorry for my mutiple questions and ramblings and exclamation marks πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

    • Lots of questions!! Hi, Alyssa!!

Next book event that’s local will be the launch party for Spirit. June 1 at the Barnes & Noble in Ellicott City. I haven’t started to advertise yet. I hope you can come! πŸ™‚ I’m also doing the Annapolis Book Festival in April, if you’re into something like that.

Reviews! I love them. I read them all. (All the ones I know about, anyway.) I love my friend feed on Goodreads, because I learn about so many books there. Without Goodreads, I wouldn’t have heard of Easy, or Under the Never Sky, or dozens of other books I’ve come to love. Sometimes I’ll be very excited about a book, so I won’t read ANY reviews ahead of time, because I’m afraid of spoilers. Sometimes I’ll get halfway through a book and feel kind of “Meh” about it, so I’ll check out the reviews to see if it’s worth sticking with. Yeah, I love reviews. Even the gif-filled ones. Sometimes they make me laugh. (Okay, sometimes they make me cry, too.)

I didn’t really have a blog tour for Spark. (I had a tiny one for the Aussie launch.) I DID have a blog tour for Storm, mostly organized by some FANTASTIC bloggers. (You guys know who you are.) I absolutely think that blogging promotion is necessary, but I think it’s more worthwhile if it’s organic. Storm would NEVER have gotten the coverage that it did if I didn’t have so many bloggers helping me along the way.

I’m definitely keeping up with my other projects. Sometimes it’s slow going, but I’m plugging away. πŸ™‚

Thanks so much for all your kind words, Alyssa!! I love having readers so close by, too!!! πŸ˜€

  26. I just need to start off by saying that I think you are SO freaking cool for talking to your fans and I am fangirling a little hard right now! I originally found your series by accident and decided I had to read it because I tried to write a book once and it was going to be about kids who could control the elements and was called elementals but, as it turns out, writing a book is really hard so I didn’t finish it. You did it way better than I could have anyway!! Even though I am, more or less, a grown adult I am completely in love with Nick Merrick and I am really worried that Breathless is going to break my heart. So I guess my question is, am I wrong? Please tell me I’m wrong? I just really want him to be happy!!! Also, thanks for being awesome!

    • First off, thank you so much!! I’m so glad you’re enjoying the series! You’re awesome, too. <3 <3 <3

So. Nick Merrick. I don't know if his story is going to break your heart. (Okay, honestly, it's breaking mine a little writing it. But not because of whether he's interested in girls or guys or alien goldfish. Because he really wants to discover himself, and he feels like he has to play a certain role for his family to accept him.) Give the novella a shot, when it comes out. See what you think. And let me know! πŸ™‚

      • I first just want to say I LOVE the Elemental series so much, when I first got Storm, I finished it in a day cuz I was to hooked to put the book down that I stayed up all night to finish it then I bought all the others. I just finished Spirit and Breathless today. My first question is does Nick ever find himself?? I like him, he is so calm and I hope he will. My other question is does Hunter ever start to really trust the Merricks??? I felt so bad for him in Spirit, I cried when he started to talk to Michael (my tears were joy for him cuz he was opening up to someone). BTW you r an Amazing writer!! Your books r just so awesome that there was never a dull moment and they really kept you there in the world of the Merrick’s. I loved it!! This series is now my Favorite!!:)

  27. Hey I LOVED your books! So here I am trying to win this cool contest, but first a question… Which is your favorite character in the whole series? Mine is Chrisβ™₯ Love from a girl in Uruguay who spent her entire holiday in Orlando reading your books(and it was only a week!)and it’s waiting for more, Lu

  28. Yay! I love your books so much! I would like to ask if anyone in your environment (your friends/family etc.) inspires the characters you write? Oh and it’s easier to write in a male POV or female POV? πŸ™‚ Thanks!

    • Believe it or not, I have an easier time writing from a male POV. Women tend to have a lot of internal thoughts going on in addition to what they actually say. Men just put it all out there. Since I like writing a lot of dialogue, it’s easier to write from a guy’s side of things. πŸ™‚

No one really inspires my characters. Of course there are elements of people I know in all my characters, but I think the same could be said for anyone.

  29. Hi Brigid!
I only just recently read the first two Elemental novellas. They were really cool!!!!! My question is, when writing Fearless was it hard to write about Hunter and his father’s relationship? Was it also hard to write about Clare’s betrayal of Hunter when he had true feelings for her?
Thank you for doing this! It’s really cool to find out all this new stuff about the books.
Can’t wait for the rest of the series!!! πŸ™‚

    • Hi, Janina!! I’m so glad you liked the novellas!! It was definitely tough to write about Hunter and his dad. I don’t like conflict, so when I write scenes with a lot of conflict, I’ll write a sentence, them change screens, then go back and write another sentence. (Almost like I don’t want to watch the characters fight.) I had a really hard time writing Hunter’s novel. His world view is very different, and very bleak.

I knew Clare was bad news from the start. And it’s never hard to torture my characters with romance. That’s what I live for!

  30. AHHHHH…BRIGID!!! First of all…LOVE your books! I have read Storm, Spark and the novellas at least 4-5 times over and over again. (Maybe I’m crazy…but the truth is you’re just that good. ;p) I love your work and I CAN’T WAIT FOR MORE!! πŸ˜€

    Okay…question..umm…..I have 2,

    1. Are you planning on making Nick and Quinn’s relationship serious???

    AND……. lol ;p

    2. Umm…..could oh so kindly tell me where the guys on your book covers live?? I promise with all my heart not to stalk them! *pinky swear*…. *grins*

  31. Hi Brigid! I am completely in love with your series!:D Now, question time:
What character’s POV do you like writing in the most? Also, what do you like most about each of the brothers?

    • Thank you so much!!! Right now, I’m enjoying Nick’s POV, but really I’ve enjoyed ALL of them, with the exception of Hunter. His head is a mixed up, messy place to be. What do I like most about each of the brothers?
Chris: His thoughtfulness. He’s a thinker.
Gabriel: His sarcasm that covers up his inner turmoil.
Michael: His devotion to his family.
Nick: His desire to live up to others’ expectations of him.

  32. Hi! I really love these books and cannot wait for Spirit to come out. Let me see questions:
What are the front colours of the next two books after Spirit? (if you know)
What interests you most about Australia? (I’m an aussie :))
and finally, (it’s probably somewhere on your website but anyway) When are the next books supposed to come out?

    • I’m not sure what the next colors will be! I’m excited to find out. πŸ™‚

I just think it would be cool to visit Australia. I’ve met so many cool people since Allen & Unwin released my book, and now I can’t wait to visit!

Upcoming release dates: Breathless in May, Spirit in June, and Nick’s untitled novel in December (I think).

      • Thankyou for answering. I love all the different colours of books but obviously not as much as whats inside πŸ™‚
They come out closer than I thought. I’m so excited!!!!!!

        • I love the colours. Storm, Spark and Spirit are in order in my bookcase they look so cool. I can’t wait to see the 4th and 5th books there as well!!!

  33. Which of your books that you’re writing/editing right now, would be your favorite? (Not including Storm, Spark and the novellas. Since they’ve already been released.)

    • I’m really enjoying writing Nick’s book. I always thought it would be a challenge to get inside his head, but so far he’s been the easiest brother to relate to.

  34. Hi Brigid! Absolutely love your books, and cannot wait for Spirit. πŸ™‚

So you mentioned that you used to teach horse riding. Why did you stop? And do you miss it?

    • That’s a good question, and I’ve been thinking about it a lot with Nick’s book — especially since Michael’s book will be last. I’m just wondering how likely (or plausible) it would be. The twins are almost 18, and Chris is 16. They could all legitimately seek emancipation. Would the county really try to take kids of that age away? I’m going to have to research it.

      • have you thought about a flashback where Michael almost loses the twins and Chris in custody and no one knew about it except michael. I know you touched on it briefly in spark…

    • Hi, Annette!! Thank you!! There is a sequel to StormSpark came out in August. Or do you mean, is there going to be a continuation of Chris and Becca’s story?

  35. Yes, a continuation of Becca and Chris. And I loved “Spark!!for Spark I convinced my librarian to buy it for the school library!!my friends loved it just as much as I did and I cannot wait for Breathless!!!!

  36. Hi again, I remember I was first recommend Storm by some readers from school and they loved the book, so I thought might give it a shot I love reading. Turned out I really like them having such a nice plot. After I finished reading and so had almost every other big reader at school we talked everyone at my school loves your book (especially the characters).
Questions: How long did it take to write each book? Do you have a special book or folder where you keep all ideas and planning for the books? and one last question When did you decide that you wanted to be an international author and get your books published?

    • I almost forgot thank you for the answering my question before. Can’t wait to read the next book. I know when I first saw the email for this I could not believe it I have always wanted an opportunity to ask questions. Thank you. I hope you can come to Australia soon πŸ™‚

  37. Wait. WAIT. You actually haven’t read HP???? O_O Were you serious? :O

Ooh, and I have a question in regards to writing male POVs. I know you said before that it’s easier for you to write them, but, er, it isn’t for me. :S I’ve been contemplating writing a dual-POV story, but writing the male perspective is really daunting. Do you have any basic tips? Thanks! πŸ˜€

    • Hi, Yahong!

So yeah, writing from the POV of a 16-year-old boy was really stressful when I sat down to try it. I’d never written from a male POV before, and I wasn’t sure I’d be able to pull it off. I kept asking my husband questions like, “Do guys think about girls a lot?” or “If a guy loves a girl, does he think about loving her, or does he just do stuff to show her he loves her?” Dozens of questions. Finally, I made my husband NUTS, and he said, “Hon, stop worrying about what ALL guys think, and start worrying about what THIS guy thinks.”

He was so right. Don’t worry about nailing “male POV” as if it’s some broad subset. Think about writing your one character. Once I thought about it like that, it was really no different from writing from a girl’s POV.

    • That’s a tough question. They all have their own unique challenges, really. I will say that I was very worried about writing from Nick’s point of view, because he’s interested in another boy, but once I started writing, his has actually been the easiest. I totally get Nick. I think he and I would be friends.

  38. Get ready for a rant Brigid.

    1. I’ll admit I wasn’t too sure on Storm when I started it. A lot of YA books are the same plot and the only difference is the names of the characters. But Storm had something I’ve always loved and almost forgotten: Elements. I’ve watched W.I.T.C.H., Avatar the Last Airbender but Storm was like a modern and YA twist to what used to be the most used skeletons in books. You made it fresh and you made it your own. After loving Storm, I was mighty excited for Spark.
Spark turned to be even better. For starters, Gabe is my favourite Merrick brother and I found Layne to be a complex character (which I like) and I related wit her more than I did to Becca. I loved how Gabriel was battling his inner demons the whole way through the novel, how his and Nick’s feud was heartbreaking (I can’t even imagine fighting like that with my twin) and how Layne and Gabriel’s romance was one of the best I ever read. I love how Elementals deals with emotional problems, bullying and love realistically. The plot is original and I just love the series.

    2. I’m begging you to make a Novella about Gabriel “Gabe” Merrick. Obviously you can’t make another book (Damn) but I can never get enough of Layne and Gabriel (PLEASE never break them up). I’d throw myself a party if they ever admitted they loved each other (I know I’m a psychopath).

    3. Can I have a little insight on your next projects?

    4. AND FINALLY, How’s it going?

    • Ha! When you told me to get ready for a rant, I was expecting something negative!

      1) I’m so glad you love the books. That really means a lot. I was just telling a friend that I love to tinker, and there are still things I wish I could change, but overall, I’m happy with how it turned out. When I was writing Spark, I spent most of the time crying for Gabriel because he just couldn’t. I remember writing the scene where Gabriel and Hunter are talking on the trail (after running). I was pregnant with my second son, writing in bed, and my husband walked in and found me SOBBING on the laptop. He was all concerned. “What’s wrong?!” My voice was all hitching and I said, “It’s so sad. Gabriel misses his mom, and she used to play board games with him and–and–and–” And my husband just rolled his eyes and walked out.

      2) I’ll see what I can do about a novella. When I sold books 4 and 5 to my publisher, I said I wasn’t going to do any more novellas, but I might draft some freebies on the blog. We’ll see.

      3) Sure! Right now I’m working on Nick’s book, which is tentatively titled Siege. If you’ve read the excerpt, you’ve probably already guessed that Nick’s been hiding an interest in guys. His brothers have no idea, and he’s afraid to tell them. I’ve also drafted the first two chapters of a murder mystery, a YA contemporary, which might go nowhere. Finally, I’ve got a few chapters written of a high fantasy novel that’s kind of secret as far as plot goes.

      4) It’s going all right. I could use more sleep and less food, but I think that’s the case for most people. πŸ˜› How’s it going with you?

      • 1. Haha! Your husband’s reaction sounded pretty funny!

        2. Woo Hoo! I love my Layne and Gabriel, I’ll take whatever I can get from them. Novella or no novella.

        3. Both sound good actually, I love fantasy novels and I’m looking to expand my range of murder mystery novels.

        4. I’ve just started Year Eleven here in Australia. Unfortunately, I’m only good at English so I’ll be failing Maths and Science. You can never have enough food Brigid, I don’t care what the magazines say, I agree on the sleep though.

  39. Brigid! Love Love LOVE Spark! I haven’t read Storm yet but I will I promise!
I’m a total romantic so my question is:

In your own words, how does Gabriel feel about Layne?

I want full details girl! πŸ˜€

  41. I really really really loved Spark, but I have a small question. Are you going to be writing about Simon some more? And if so, are you gonna give him a love interest, too? :)Because I really loved his character!

  42. I really really really loved Spark, but I have a small question. Are you going to be writing about Simon some more? And if so, are you gonna give him a love interest, too? πŸ™‚

    • Hi, Estefania! Thank you so much for your comment! I’m so glad you loved Spark! Simon makes a brief appearance in Spirit, and I’m toying with the idea of giving him a bigger role in Nick’s book. I haven’t decided yet. πŸ™‚

  43. Hello!

I am 12 years old, and I just got done reading all of the books that you have out; Elemental, Storm, Spark, and Fearless, for the 5th time each. Before I started to read these books, I was living in a “Fantasy” world, where I thought that everything important in life, wasn’t important. But since I read Storm, it brought me to reality, where I realized that I missed, in the “Reality” word, a lot! (That is a good thing) I am also a very emotional child, and I feel like these books are my lifeline, and if I stop reading these, i will suffer. I cry every night about these, (which is a good thing) I even pretend and think and wish that they actually exist, and their “powers”. A few things that I like about these books are…

1: These books are HILARIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!! There are a lot of funny parts, even when there are serious parts going on, you just have to put a funny part. πŸ˜‰

2: The brothers are soooooooo close together, and they may fight, but even at the end of Storm, Gabriel and Michael get along. And they know that they have each other to survive, and that they NEED each other to survive. That is one thing that makes me cry. Once again, that’s a good thing. πŸ™‚

3: There is romance, and the best part, is that it was a love triangle. I am not a big fan of those, and I usually just like one of the guys, but in this one, it was interesting, had some type of action, and I really liked both guys. But, sorry Hunter, i will always be on team Chris, Michael, Gabriel, or Nick.

4: This book had action. when most people write about action, or read about action, they say it is the best thing in a book. but these books, these had something going on every single page!!!!! Every page kept my heart rate up, and every chapter kept me turning the page after I said this was the last chapter, I couldn’t help it. I would keep going! πŸ™‚ :0

5: There was enough irony, and many suspicion going on. Like, I would think in Storm, “ok, what is Drew really doing. I don’t think he is really going to say sorry…,…,.”

I feel like I have a very close connection with the brothers, and the girls, and it makes me very happy, and another time I will cry.

like in the second book, Spark, when Nick and Gabriel get into a fight, like, an actual fight, in the begging, I started to cry, because now, they aren’t “close” or as brotherly as used to be, and I started to cry in the middle of silent reading day in Reading class and my reading teacher, Mrs. Coffey, asked, “Are you ok Merceydeis? Do you need to talk with me? Do you need to go in the hallway? Do, do, you,.. are you ok?” she asked really fast. I got myself together and said, “UGGGGGG!!! Yeah. It’s just the book. I really get into these ones and, UGGGG, sorry, just go back to reading everyone, I am perfectly fine.” I said while wiping my eyes. she asked which book I was reading and I told her, the same books since August. and she said, “UGG, that series?! I never thought i would say this, and I hate to do, But you need to read something else than these books.! All you do is go back and forth with these books.” I told her, “I do all of my projects and reading assignments, Right? I get A’s on them all, Right? So I don’t think that is a good idea, because I am a way better person. I am not a spaz, and I am very calm and ‘Normal’.” And most of that comes from what ever 2 characters I am reading about. Now, i didn’t mean to sound like a brat or anything, but Gabriel’s anger just took over me. I told one of my friends and she said, “well, maybe your a 5th.” I said, that I will refuse to be a 5th until I meet the Merricks, so I know how to get a control over them, then, I will tell them all about my very emotional life, and so they hopefully understand. And maybe Becca could help me. πŸ˜‰ Not to put more stress on their lives, but, just to see what I could get out of them. And maybe we could “work” together wether with the Landscaping business, or just with Tyler and Seth, or just for the heck of it.

But I also feel for Gabriel. I know what it feels like to feel and be a failure. I also know what it feels like to just look at a math problem and think it looks like Chinese. Cause it Does!!!!!!! .Jeeze! .. UG..,,..,….,.,,.,.., Sorry, give me a sec. I am starting to cry again. …,.,….,.,… kk, I think I am good.

So, I just want to tell you; thanks so much for writing, and cant’t wait till the next books come out!!! this may sound weird, but I say this to my band Teacher, cause I do. but I love YOU! not like, to marry you, but just, you make me happy that you wrote these. Thanks!! I will be wriing back to ask questions!!!!! Be waiting for a TON of them! πŸ˜‰

    • Hi, Merceydeis! Thank you so much for writing to me! I’m going to do my best to answer the questions in your other comment, but it might take me a while, so be patient with me, OK? πŸ™‚

I’m really glad that you like all the characters in the Elemental novels, and that you’ve identified so strongly with them. I love them too. One of my favorite parts about writing the series is that it sometimes feels like something that *could* happen — a next door neighbor could be an Elemental, right? I’m pretty grounded in reality, but I like to imagine things (being a writer and all), so I know what you mean about wondering about yourself and the world and how you fit into it.

When I was your age, I used to re-read and re-read and re-read books so many times that they’d be falling apart. Heck, I still do that. But sometimes when you’re re-reading the same books over and over again, you miss some pretty cool series. Some of my favorite books recently have been “Under the Never Sky” by Veronica Rossi (you’ll LOVE Perry) and “Throne of Glass” by Sarah Maas. If you like brothers (seriously, who doesn’t??) check out “Perfect Chemistry” by Simone Elkeles or “Pushing the Limits” by Katie McGarry. There’s also “The Outsiders” by S. E. Hinton, one of the most famous “brother” books of all time.

Finally, there’s nothing wrong with crying over books. I cry my eyes out while I’m writing them, so I’m glad some of that comes across on the other side of the page. <3 <3 <3

      Talk to you soon,
      Brigid

  44. Now, here come the questions;

1: Elemental: Has Michael always loved Emily?, and Emily love Michael?

2: Elemental: Did Emily die after they jumped into the water? Or when they got to the other side, and then they met Tyler and them?

3: Storm: Is Becca a Pure Elemental, or 1 of the weaker 1s like Tyler and Seth?

4: Storm: Drew isn’t an Elemental, is he?

5: Storm: Did Chris ever knew that Becca existed before she saved him? And did Chris’s mom ever tell the brothers about her?

6: Fearless: Is this chick that wanted to learn about Hunter’s guns and wanted to learn to shoot them, is she that Calla chick who starts those house fires? If not, please explain everything about this girl, because i have read it 5 times and still don’t understand her.

7: Fearless: Is this Chick the same chick in Hunter’s Spirit book?

8: Spark: When in the book did Nick get his cast off?

9: Spark: Did Gabriel learn to do control his element better by the end of the book? I didn’t understand that either.

    Random Questions;

10: I saw the Storm and Spark videos on you tube. AWESOME!!!!! πŸ™‚ Are you guys going to make actual movies out of all of books? Even the Novellas?

11: Why did you choose the names for all of the main Characters(lets make it easier) Just Hunter, Michael, Nick, Gabriel, Chris Becca, Quinn, Layne, Calla, and Bill.

12: If you were to make movies, would the characters be the ones on the newer covers? Or the original covers with just the guys? PLEASE BE THE ONE WITH THE GUYS. THE ORIGINAL COVERS!!!!!!!!!! Because in the books, these brothers are supposed to be buff, and they are, and hot, they are, and the newer covers are skinny wimpy guys, and Layne on the book isn’t all that cute. So please tell me that if you make the movies, that they brothers are going to be the ones on the original cover!!! Because they do kinda look a like. And they are hot!!! So please tell me that they are not just supermodels and that they could play the parts for the movies, because I will Be DEVASTATED!!!!!!!!!!!!!! πŸ™ πŸ™ πŸ™ πŸ™ πŸ™ πŸ™ πŸ™

13: Are you going to write more books for Becca and Chris? And Layne and Gabriel? So, technically I am asking if you are going to write a sequel to each “couple” after the series is done? EXAMPLE: Chris & Becca, Gabriel &Layne, Michael & Hannah, etc. after all of them have at least one normal regular book?

14: With the Novellas, on Barnes & Noble, it says that it is only an e-book; Elemental, Fearless, Breathless, but could i somehow get them on paper back?

15: What made you choose to use the Elements for the Merricks. I know that you said that you started to write about these brothers & they were vampires, then something else, & you said no scenario ever worked, but you couldn’t get the brothers out of your head. And you said that you started writing about the Elements, and it worked out. So, what gave you the idea to say, “Oh, we could try the Elements!”

16: Is Elemental a real word? I mean, is it something that you found in an old book, is it a word and you used it the correct way, is it a real word, just twisted the definition, etc.

17: Once you are done with the series; every brother has an actual book, are you going to write 125 page books about each couple as a family? Like, Christmas together? Fourth if July? etc.

18: This is related to the question 17 – Are you going to write stories about the couples, Becca & Chris, Gabriel & Layne, Michael & Hannah, Nick & IDK, when they are either all all adults or just a few weeks or months later after the series ends, and find other teenagers who are Elementals and are going through the same things that they all went through and are looking for help? And they all give it?

19: This question is related 17 & 18. Once the books are done, are you going to go into the future when they are all adults and Michael & Hannah have child/children, and Nick & IDK have child/children, and Gabriel & Layne have child/children, and Chris and Becca have child/children? PLEASE!!!!!!!! Pretty Pretty Pretty Pretty PLEASE!!! That would be so cool! Or, OR, you could write each book on each couple, Becca & Chris, etc. on their prospective when they get married and when each girl has their child/children. Kinda like when the 1st book was on Chris and Becca’s prospective, then Gabriel and Layne’s, etc. Maybe Gabriel and Layne have identical twins!!!! That would be sol cool! And Nick and IDK could have identical Twins!!!! COOL!! and you can figure out how many kids Michael & Hannah have, and same for Becca & Chris. PLEASE THINK ABOUT IT!!! I WILL NEVER FORGET IT!!! SO If YOU DO, I WILL REMIND YOU!!!!!!!!!! PLease!

20: If Becca’s father is a guide, and her mom is nothing, doesn’t that make her a weaker Elemental?

21: If Gabriel & Layne get married and have kids, are they going to be weaker Elementals or Pure Elementals? Because if Layne is nothing, but Gabriel is a Pure Elemental, if I am right, you need 2 chromosomes to create a Recessive gene, and if i am right, both of his parents are Weaker Elementals, but ok, so pretend that the parents are Recessive gene. When you put both of them together, you get a +Recessive gene, which made the brothers all pure, because 1+1=2, and weak+weak= strong/ Pure right? So would Layne & Gabriel’s kid/children be pure, because Gabriel already has the 2 genes? Or would they be weak? Same goes for Nick & IDK, and Michael & Hannah?

22: But for Chris & Becca, if she is a weaker Elemental, would their children be just regular Pure Elementals? Or, would the couple create something way more powerful than Pure? Cool!!!!!!!

You really need to post back as soon as possible! I have some cool questions to have answered and cool ideas!

    Bye! πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ˜‰ πŸ˜‰

I realize that you area a busy woman; Author, mother, Wife, so take as much time that you need! πŸ˜‰ πŸ™‚

    • I’m going to do these a few questions at a time:

1: Elemental: Has Michael always loved Emily?, and Emily love Michael?

I don’t know that they were always in love with each other. I think they both misunderstood each other, and when they came together at the little sports complex, they realized that they weren’t as different as they originally assumed.

2: Elemental: Did Emily die after they jumped into the water? Or when they got to the other side, and then they met Tyler and them?

There will be a lot more about this in book 4, Nick’s novel, tentatively titled Siege. So … stay tuned. You’ll find out. πŸ™‚

3: Storm: Is Becca a Pure Elemental, or 1 of the weaker 1s like Tyler and Seth?

She’s a pure Elemental. Part of her power is drawing people to her, and that’s why she was bullied and harassed so mercilessly. (Hunter suffers the same thing.)

4: Storm: Drew isn’t an Elemental, is he?

      Nope.

5: Storm: Did Chris ever knew that Becca existed before she saved him? And did Chris’s mom ever tell the brothers about her?

Chris knew she existed — they’ve gone to school together all their lives. But did he know she was an Elemental? No. And Chris’s mom never told the brothers about her.

6: Fearless: Is this chick that wanted to learn about Hunter’s guns and wanted to learn to shoot them, is she that Calla chick who starts those house fires? If not, please explain everything about this girl, because i have read it 5 times and still don’t understand her.

Clare and Calla are completely separate characters. I only developed Clare because I needed a romantic angle for Hunter’s novella, and it was a good way to give some insight into how he was around girls. When you say, “Please explain everything about this girl,” I’m not sure if you mean Calla or Clare. Calla will have a lot more explanation in Spirit. Again, stay tuned… πŸ™‚

7: Fearless: Is this Chick the same chick in Hunter’s Spirit book?

      Nope!

8: Spark: When in the book did Nick get his cast off?

Yeah, so this might have been an editing misfire on my part. I’ve been asked this question before. I had a line about it that got deleted, but I didn’t realize it until after publication. Let’s all just assume that air healed Nick super-quick, mmm’kay? πŸ˜›

9: Spark: Did Gabriel learn to do control his element better by the end of the book? I didn’t understand that either.

Yes! He’s walking on the road in the rain (after Layne’s father throws him out of the car), and he picks up dry pieces of twigs from the side of the road and lights them on fire without any accelerant or tools (like a lighter).

      Random Questions;

10: I saw the Storm and Spark videos on you tube. AWESOME!!!!! Are you guys going to make actual movies out of all of books? Even the Novellas?

Right now, there are no official plans in place. That would be awesome though, wouldn’t it?? I’m going to try to do a live action trailer for Spirit, but I’m doing it myself, so it might turn out like crap. We’ll see how it goes.

    • More answers!

11: Why did you choose the names for all of the main Characters(lets make it easier) Just Hunter, Michael, Nick, Gabriel, Chris Becca, Quinn, Layne, Calla, and Bill.

Hunter’s name had quite a journey. In the original vampire novel, his name was Gareth, because he was one of the original knights of the round table. When I rewrote that book as you know it now, I made that a little more modern and turned it into Garrett. It was Garrett for the LONGEST time — until right before the book went to copy edits. By then I was halfway through Spark, and I realized that Garrett and Gabriel were too close (visually) if the two guys were going to be in a lot of scenes together. So Garrett had to go. I went through a lot of name choices before settling on Hunter, believe me.

Michael, Nick, Gabriel, and Chris were the names of my original vampire brothers when I was in high school. In the vampire novel, the heroine was named Rebecca, but I wanted something a little more modern, so I shortened that to Becca. Quinn was named after the blond cheerleader on Glee. Layne is the name of my high school calculus teacher’s daughter (he helped me with the math stuff in Spark), and the name just fit. Calla? No real thought went into that one. Same with Bill. I just needed a name for a character and it seemed to do the job.

The guys on the covers are models, not actors, so even if there was an Elemental movie in production (there’s not) they probably wouldn’t be playing the guys. (And the “newer” covers you refer to are actually the Australia/New Zealand covers.)

13: Are you going to write more books for Becca and Chris? And Layne and Gabriel? So, technically I am asking if you are going to write a sequel to each β€œcouple” after the series is done? EXAMPLE: Chris & Becca, Gabriel &Layne, Michael & Hannah, etc. after all of them have at least one normal regular book?

Right now, I don’t have a plan to write another book for Chris, Becca, Gabriel, or Layne. I told their stories. πŸ™‚ But Michael and Hannah will get their own book — Book 5.

14: With the Novellas, on Barnes & Noble, it says that it is only an e-book; Elemental, Fearless, Breathless, but could i somehow get them on paper back?

Elemental is included at the back of Storm (in the US edition) and Breathless will be included at the back of Spirit (again, in the US edition). Otherwise, they’re e-book only. Fearless does not appear in print.

15: What made you choose to use the Elements for the Merricks. I know that you said that you started to write about these brothers & they were vampires, then something else, & you said no scenario ever worked, but you couldn’t get the brothers out of your head. And you said that you started writing about the Elements, and it worked out. So, what gave you the idea to say, β€œOh, we could try the Elements!”

Really, I was just looking for anything that went handily with the number four. πŸ™‚

    • 16: Is Elemental a real word? I mean, is it something that you found in an old book, is it a word and you used it the correct way, is it a real word, just twisted the definition, etc.

It’s a real word, but I kind of twisted the definition to suit my needs.

17: Once you are done with the series; every brother has an actual book, are you going to write 125 page books about each couple as a family? Like, Christmas together? Fourth if July? etc.

I’ve thought about doing holiday specials for the brothers, but right now I just don’t have time. I think when the series is done, it’s done.

Probably not. I love the world and the characters and the universe, but sometimes I think series can go on too long and lose their spark. I’d rather quit when I’m ahead. Then again, I might write book five and be unable to give the brothers up. I guess we’ll see when we get there. πŸ™‚

SO If YOU DO, I WILL REMIND YOU!!!!!!!!!! PLease!

Hahaha, I love your imagination. I probably won’t carry it out that far.

20: If Becca’s father is a guide, and her mom is nothing, doesn’t that make her a weaker Elemental?

I don’t think Becca knows the full extent of her powers yet.

I haven’t really thought that far in advance for their kids. πŸ™‚

22: But for Chris & Becca, if she is a weaker Elemental, would their children be just regular Pure Elementals? Or, would the couple create something way more powerful than Pure? Cool!!!!!!!

I guess we’ll have to see, huh? πŸ™‚

  45. Cool! Thank – you so much for answering some of my questions for now!! Sorry I have so many, I just really want to know. πŸ˜‰

    Thanks again!

  46. Is Breathless actually going to be a real book? and I was wondering where are Quinns parents? Thanks for answering my Questions!

    • Breathless is a novella, but Nick will have a full length novel, out around January 2014. The working title is Siege, but that’s not set in stone. Quinn’s parents show up in both. πŸ™‚

  47. Hi Brigid!

    1. Do you have any tips on writing a drunk character? And the hangover? How do they behave/feel and what do they think?

    2. How do you deal with negative reviews? After reading one, do you feel like your book is a piece of crap and you should just stop writing or can you let it go easily?

    3. Would you ever want to write a YA contemporary romance? Or New Adult romance?

    4. Will you post a scene from Spirit like you did for Breathless?

    • 1. Do you have any tips on writing a drunk character? And the hangover? How do they behave/feel and what do they think?

No real tips. I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve been drunk in my life, so… πŸ˜› But one of the great things about writing (of which I need to CONSTANTLY remind myself) is that you can make it all up. Instead of worrying what a hangover feels like for everyone, worry about what a hangover feels like for your character. Some people can get piss-themselves drunk and wake up the next morning with a minor headache. Some people can’t even climb out of bed. Whatever fits your needs is probably fine.

I’d be careful using drunkenness to convey too much, however. Your readers aren’t drunk, and you don’t want them to lose too much respect for your character. Lowered inhibitions is one thing. Sloppy, falling down, slurred speech…just be careful. (My two cents. Other authors might feel COMPLETELY differently. Go with your gut.)

      2. How do you deal with negative reviews? After reading one, do you feel like your book is a piece of crap and you should just stop writing or can you let it go easily?

Somewhere in between. There have been reviews that make me cry. There have been reviews that made me question my right to be a published author. There has NEVER been a review that made me want to stop writing. How do I deal with them? I just have to close the browser and move on, you know? Everyone is entitled to their opinion.

      3. Would you ever want to write a YA contemporary romance? Or New Adult romance?

Absolutely yes to both questions. I feel like my books already have a contemporary feel. My editor loves that my books have been getting progressively more edgy (i.e., adult), and Michael’s book will feature 23-year-old protagonists. I love that YA is starting to skew older.

      4. Will you post a scene from Spirit like you did for Breathless?

Yes!! Absolutely. When we’re a little closer.

  48. Already told you how awesome I feel you and your books are.
Still suffering from the worst book hangover from these boys.
Did Mecca’s father know she was in the car on the bridge when
He tried so hard to destroy it and therefore Becca also?

  49. With your novella Breathless, Will it be avalible as a hardcopy(paper back)or an e-book? also Will Gabriel have a part in Breathless? Thanks

      • Where can i find the electronic format? and you know how you said Elemental is included with the print edition of Storm, does that apply to the Australian edition, beacuse the book i read didn’t have it? and if i can’t find Breathless in the back of Spirit, can i find it elsewhere? Thank you for your fast reply.I love your books by the way.I have re-read Spark like 7 times!

        • Right now in Australia, I think you can only find the electronic version on Amazon.com. I know they’re trying to get the rights released on iBooks and Google play, but unfortunately, I think it’s just Amazon. I hope this helps!

  50. Sorry, another question!hehe From what ive been reading about Breathless, i’m staring to thing Nick is romantically interested in a guy?(Adam maybe)Am i completely off track???!!

  51. You are my most favorite author in the world!!!!! (Sorry. That came out of no where, but, just saying. Incase you need the encouragement or something,. IDK it just poped into my head) You are the best!! πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ˜‰ πŸ˜‰

      • Hey!!!! I was just wondering, is it legal to “Talk/Chat” with a director who directs movies, to request to make them into movies? Cause if they can make the movie “Beautiful Creatures” the way they did with all of the special effects, they can make the books into really cool movies! Then you would be known as the #1 Author in the world, or whatever they call the best authors in the world.. KK I thank you again for the answers that you have answered for me. I am sorry for all of the posts. they are probably making you anxious or something. THANKS!!!

              • For Michael’s book, do you mean the title? What do you mean that Nick and Michael’s book is going to be more “adultish”?

                • Michael is 23, so he might face some slightly more adult situations than his brothers do. It’s still going to be me writing the book, so it’s still going to be written in the style you guys are used to, but I’ve got a little more freedom with how much Michael can get away with. πŸ™‚

                  • NICE!!!! I have another question …… again …. πŸ™‚

Is Gabriel going to get along better with Michael in Hunter’s book?

                    • Hmm. There’s a lot of Michael and a lot of Gabriel in Hunter’s book, but there’s not a tremendous amount of them interacting together. That said, when they do interact, yes, they get along better.

  52. When you are writing do you find yourself writing how you feel.. Like if you are upset are the boys upset or if you are angry are the boys angry..Also was there anything in the books that editors make you take out that you were upset about..

    • This is a good question. And the answer is YES. Sort of. But in reverse.

I generally have a good idea how a scene is going to go, and I firmly believe in putting conflict on every page. One of my mottoes is, “If everyone is getting along, you’re doing it wrong.” So even if two characters aren’t fighting, someone should be having conflicting thoughts or emotions or a disagreement or whatever.

Sometimes my characters feel very isolated. Like Gabriel in Spark. Because I spent so much time in Gabriel’s head, I started to feel very isolated and bitter. It definitely played a role in my emotions. I’m writing Nick’s book now, and he’s keeping a secret from his whole family, and it’s making him feel TERRIBLE. So of course, I am feeling terrible, like I’m keeping a secret from my family, even though I’m not!

But when I’m in a bad mood and it doesn’t match what a character is feeling, it’s hard for me to sit down and write, so sometimes I don’t bother. πŸ˜›

  53. Hey this is hope, merceydeis friend… she had me read the first two books of the elemental series.. I loved them! well they were allright πŸ˜‰ haha just wanted to let you know!

  54. Are there going to be any more books about Chris and Becca? those are mu two favorite characters in the series so far. if so when is that book coming out. if not would you consider writing another book about them.

    • Right now I’m only contracted for two more books: Nick’s story and Michael’s story. But I know everyone loves Chris and Becca, so I’ve been toying with the idea of a novella about them as a couple… stay tuned. πŸ™‚

  55. Hi Brigid! Another quick question… (don’t know if you’ve answered this before or not!)

So, is Nick’s book only in his POV or is it multiple POV like Spark and Storm? I’m very excited for Nick’s book! I think it will be my favorite πŸ™‚

    • Both Nick’s novella (Breathless) and his full-length novel (tentatively titled Siege) are in dual POV’s of Nick and Quinn. It’s been the most complicated novel to write so far, because both Nick and Quinn are in secret relationships with other people.

      • Wow, yeah, that must be complicated. Didn’t know that Quinn would be cheating as well, lol. Sounds awesome, though! Thank you πŸ™‚

  56. Hello!! I LOVE YOUR BOOKS!!! One question, are the guys in the cover computerized? Or are they models if so, what are their names… Im waay to obsessed haha thank you! I’ll keep waiting for more and will support you all the way!

  57. Another quick question… Is Nick gonna stay gay throughout the entire series? Haha my friends and I are sooo desperate! But it’s okay if you can’t tell us.. I understand haha πŸ™‚ i love you so much! You’re officially my favorite author! Good Luck on writing!

  58. I was just looking at the novellas and saw that Fearless has the same cover as Spirit. They are both books about Hunter but they have different descriptions, which girl in each is meant to be in Spirit?
Could you please tell me the release date for breathless?
I can’t wait for the release of Spirit!

    • In Spirit, the heroine is named Kate. She’s a new character for the series. The short story Fearless is a story from before Hunter came to meet the Merricks, when his father was alive.

Breathless comes out on April 30, 2013.

I hope you like them both!

  59. So…… Questions

Spark: If Chris and Becca, and Quinn are Juniors, how are they eating with Nick, and how is Hunter eating with Gabriel?
How do you pronounce Layne’s name? Hope thinks it is “La – nie”
How do you pronounce Gabriel’s name? Hope thinks it is “Gab – Riiiiieeelll”

I have no idea if the pronounciation for Gabriel and Layne’s names made sense, but here is a better example:

Normally, a child calls their stuffed bears, “Teddy” bears. the ending of teddy, is that how Layne’s name is pronounced? or is it Like Lane. Like the road lane?

    Thanks!!
P.S. Thanks for your latest answers, i couldnt click a reply button. so i started down here. TAKE YOUR TIME FOR ANSWERING MY QUESTION!!!! πŸ™‚ πŸ˜‰

    • Juniors and Seniors have lunch at the same time in my book world.

Layne is pronounced just like the road: Lane.

Gabriel is GABE-ree-el. (The girl form is Gabrielle, gab-ree-ELLE)

  60. Hi I am looking for books to read and your books seem interesting…would you suggest reading them in order or does order not matter as much

  61. I know that you like fire and air, but if the pentagram were real, where do you think you’d fall based on what you know about yourself?

  62. Hi Brigid,

I am reading this series in South Africa on my kindle at the same time as my 15 year old niece in Australia and she can’t get the Breathless and Fearless as she doesn’t have a kindle are these essential to read? and what order should I read them in? Love your writing!

    • Hi, Monique! Thanks for your message!

First off, they’re not essential reading. That said, she doesn’t need a Kindle to read them. Amazon has the “Cloud Reader” so you can read the stories right on a computer screen. Or if she has a smartphone or a tablet, almost everything has a Kindle app. If you’ve already bought them, she doesn’t even need to: you can “lend” them to her using the Kindle’s lending feature.

I hope this helps! I know my publisher is working on making the rights available in other countries on platforms other than Kindle and Nook, but we’re not quite there yet.

  63. Hi Brigid! *waves*

I have a couple questions for you:

    1. Which twin is older, Nick or Gabriel? (technically it’s only by like a minute or whatever, but I’m still curious :P)
    2. If Gabriel is so good at sports, can’t he get a scholarship or something so he can go to fire school? Do they even offer those?
    3. Are we ever going to get the chance to see Gabriel play in an actual game?

LOVE this series, I’m so excited for the next novel + novella to come out. Already preordered πŸ˜€ Thank you!!

    • Hi, Kayla!! I’m so glad you like the series!!

      1. Which twin is older, Nick or Gabriel? (technically it’s only by like a minute or whatever, but I’m still curious πŸ˜› )
I’ve never specifically addressed this, but my gut says Gabriel is older. πŸ™‚

      2. If Gabriel is so good at sports, can’t he get a scholarship or something so he can go to fire school? Do they even offer those?
I thought about the sports scholarship angle, but I didn’t really explore it in the books. I wanted Gabriel to find a path for himself that wasn’t about being great at sports. In Maryland, fire school isn’t necessarily a college degree, it’s taken through a vocational school (I believe). I think there’s a lot of pressure for kids to go to school and get a degree, but that’s not always the right thing for everyone, and it’s not the ONLY path out there.

      3. Are we ever going to get the chance to see Gabriel play in an actual game?
Haha, probably not. But maybe in Nick’s book. Maybe.

  64. Love Breathless.. worth the wait.. are we going to need to wait to see more about this in Nicks book or do we get to find out more about Nick in the book being released in May

    • You won’t see any of Adam in Spirit, but if you’ve read Breathless, you’ll see in Spirit that he’s hiding something. (Though people who haven’t read Breathless probably won’t be able to figure it out.) In Nick’s full length book, you’ll get Nick’s story with Adam.

  65. Hi Brigid!
Only just found this thread and I’m so glad I did. It’s incredible that your fans get to talk to you and visa versa. So thankyou!!
Just thought I’d let you know that both my sister and I adored Breathless, so much so that my sister was convinced to read the rest of the books πŸ™‚ and as for me, it was definitely my favourite novella.

Anyway, I’ve been pondering this for quite a while: you mentioned when Michael came into his Element that he wanted to be outside all the time, Becca brought home sick animals and Gabriel started the fire that killed his parents. Did you ever consider how Nick and Chris came into theirs? And did Hunter have something like that too other than the bullying?

Also, have you ever had a moment where you had a particular scene planned out, but as you were writing, the characters took over and it went in a completely new direction and turned out better than expected?

    Your books are simply incredible.

Oh, I almost forgot! Thanks for the playlist at the back of Spark! I personally love Something beautiful, start a fire and your guardian angel. If you get the chance, please add another one! I love connecting music to books.

    • Hi, Bell! Thank you so much! I’m so glad you enjoyed Breathless and the rest of the books. I’m glad your sister liked it too. πŸ™‚ Let me see if I can tackle your questions.

Anyway, I’ve been pondering this for quite a while: you mentioned when Michael came into his Element that he wanted to be outside all the time, Becca brought home sick animals and Gabriel started the fire that killed his parents. Did you ever consider how Nick and Chris came into theirs?

Well, Nick had a few incidents (that will make it into Siege, his book), and Chris did too. I loosely alluded to Chris discovering his powers when he and Michael were nearly drowned by Tyler and his friends.

And did Hunter have something like that too other than the bullying?

Hunter has a lot of problems controlling his powers, and you’ll see this in Spirit. πŸ™‚

Also, have you ever had a moment where you had a particular scene planned out, but as you were writing, the characters took over and it went in a completely new direction and turned out better than expected?

All. The. Time. This happens more often than I should admit. In Spirit, when I first thought of the character of Kate, I wanted her to be one way, but the more I kept writing, the more I found myself fighting the character. I finally had to let her tell her own story. There’s an especially poignant moment in Siege (Nick’s book) when Gabriel finds out about Nick and Adam, and he totally doesn’t react the way I expected him to.

Oh, I almost forgot! Thanks for the playlist at the back of Spark! I personally love Something beautiful, start a fire and your guardian angel. If you get the chance, please add another one! I love connecting music to books.

There’s a playlist at the back of Spirit, too, and since I got such great feedback from the playlist at the back of Spark, I’ll probably keep doing it. πŸ™‚

Thank you again for writing! Feel free to ask more questions here, or email me anytime at brigidmary@gmail.com.

      • I’m confused. You say, Nick’s book is called Seige, but in Goodreads, the book’s title shows Secret? Was it changed sometime after this message?

        • Yes, the title was tentatively Siege, but it’s since been changed to Secret. It was more fitting for the book. It’s full of secrets. (Not just Nick’s.)

  66. I was wondering if you could detail your road to publication…for those of us who are still working at it, it’s always to see how it was done.

I love the books btw =)

    Thanks!!!

    • Hi! I do have a post about that, believe it or not: http://www.brigidkemmerer.com/2011/01/living-the-dream/

Tamar Rydzinski is no longer my agent, but the whole timeline still applies. It’s a long process. Sometimes at this point in the game, when my third book is due out in a few weeks, it’s easy to forget how long it took to get here, but I just read back through that post, and I’m amazed how long it took. 2007, for goodness’ sake!

Good luck with your own writing, and hang in there. It’s definitely worth it in the end. <3 <3 <3 You'll have to let me know how it works out.

  67. Is there going to be another book in the elemental series for either Michael or Nick? It would be wicked for them to have full novels. With Michael and all his ‘baggage’ and what went down in breathless. I feel like I’m missing out on more awesomeness……and that makes me sad………….lol πŸ™

And I mean the ending to spirit wasn’t all that conclusive……oh no was that the point? The whole life goes on with more problems thing?

Sorry, I’m kind of ranting, but I just love the Merrick brothers!

  68. Hi Brigid! I just finished Spirit and loved it as I do all your books. I simply love your talent for flawless characterization! I have a question for you – I’ve always wondered.. When sketching out a (new) character, what questions do you ask yourself?

    • You know, it’s funny. Sometimes a new character comes to me, and I just start writing to see what happens. That’s how I developed Hunter, and later, Adam. Sometimes I throw a character onto the page and I have no idea who they’re going to be. I’ll just keep writing, letting them be flat, until it finally comes to me. That’s how Layne was, in Spark. Sometimes I *think* I know how I want a character to behave, but once I start writing them, I realize it’s not working at all. That was totally Kate in Spirit. But I never sit down and fully sketch out a character before I start writing. That just doesn’t work for me. (But it’s different for every writer.) What’s more helpful to me is when I get halfway through a book I’ll start a list of what characters want and what their obstacles are, just so I can be sure I’m keeping them all in line. Like, in Storm:

Chris wants to feel like he’s a part of his family and his brothers respect him, but he’s the youngest, and he’s living a bit in their shadow. He also wants to ask Becca out, but she’s already rejected him once. Becca hates her father and is hiding a secret, but… (You get the idea.)

  69. Hey! I love all your books! I was wondering if the four vampire brothers you wrote about in high school can be read. I’m curious because I love vampires and I love the brothers so is it a published book?

    • It’s never been published. In the next few weeks I think I’m going to post the first chapter, just for fun, so stay tuned! (And thank you so much! I’m so glad you’re enjoying the series! <3)

  70. I loved the book spirit. Do you feel like 5 books is enough and is there a Possibility kate could back to life? What happened to Silver to make him so heart less was it the training or something in life? Why did silver kill Kate and were is silver from? Who killed hunters dad. Is calla alive or dead? There is a feeling in me that the next guide won’t like killing kids ture. Are there laws about killing pure Elements not everyone is bad so somepeople don’t need to die.

  71. Can I buy the Elemental Series in Australia as well as the Novellas in book form? and If so where could I buy them or do I need to go through Amazon?

    • For the novellas, you’d need to buy them in e-book form. They aren’t in print in Australia. The full length novels, however, are in print and widely available in Australia and New Zealand. Thank you!

  72. Hi Brigid, I apologise if you have answered this question in advance:

I was wondering if there is a tour to Australia perhaps somewhere in the near future? My best friend an I are die-hard fans of this series (and your writing talent of course!) and would love to meet you!

  73. I love your books so much! My question is: have you ever written out the conversation Gabriel has with Layne about how he is an elemental? I would love to read that! The ending of Spark left me wanting so much more!
Also, thanks for being such a cool author and creating these awesome books!

    • Awww, thank you so much! I never wrote the conversation between Gabriel and Layne because the reader already knows his powers. I love getting questions like this because I know my readers are so invested in my world that they just want to see more of it. I wish I had time to write these additional scenes. Maybe one day!

      • I’ll definitely be waiting in anticipation! =) Gabriel is by far my favorite brother (so far, anyway but it’s so hard to decide because the brothers are all so lovable!) and I really wanted to know how Layne would respond. As a side note, I remember reading a comment of yours about Etienne St. Clair and I would just like to fangirl for a moment because he. is. amazing. And the fact that you’ve read several books I like as well is pretty awesome, too! Anyways……thanks again for writing such awesome books!

  74. If they do make a movie why not just use the characters on the cover? I love this series its everything i love in a book and are Nicks brothers going to find out hes gay? That was shocking

    • If there’s a movie, I have no control over who the actors are. (Sorry.) Besides, the covers were designed back in 2011, so if a movie ever happened, those guys would probably be too old. πŸ˜›

And yes, the other Merricks will find out in Nick’s book. πŸ™‚

    • Hi, Cherry! Elemental is at the back of the US print edition of Storm, and Breathless is at the back of the US print edition of Spirit. Unfortunately, Fearless will only be an e-book for the foreseeable future. Please know that you don’t need an e-reader to read them. All major e-book retailers allow you to read their e-books on your computer screen, and most major retailers also have an app you can download to your phone, to make it work like an e-reader. (While I have a Kindle at home, I read books on my iPhone All. The. Time.)

      I hope this helps!

  75. I have my on character is me but different. Her name is Yia. I had her in my head a long time and her older brother.

  76. I believe that you should make movies from the elemental series because they are great and I have heard a lot of people say that a movie would be awesome. Are you going to, or thinking of making a movie from the series?
THEY ARE AWESOME BOOKS AND I THINK YOU ARE A GREAT WRITER!

  77. I want to read Storm and the rest of the Elemental series, but my mom is SUPER striched on what I read. so do the books have anything inappropriate in them??

    • I’m really tempted to say, “Yes, there’s always a chance,” but I hate leaving false hope like that. My husband had told me I should make Emily still be alive somehow, and I thought about it, but I don’t like sending the message that death isn’t final. I like to keep my books as grounded in reality as possible (and I know that might sound ridiculous, considering they’re about guys who control the elements).

    • Secret and Sacrifice will definitely be available in Australia (January and October of 2014, respectively). I’m working on getting the short novellas (Elemental, Fearless, and Breathless) available in Australia.

  78. Hey, my question is not so much about the series as it is about the publishing side. How many queries did you send before you were given the ‘yes’ and did you ever lose hope that an agent would accept your work? If so, what advice would you give to aspiring authors trying not to let the rejections get to her/him?

  79. I will be honest and say I any read all the questions on here since I’m viewing this on my iPhone and the new iOS update doesn’t do “Full Sites,” at least on my phone. So, please forgive me if this has already been asked, but do you have room for another critique partner? On my blog you can see some of my credentials and I would be MORE than happy to discuss this with ya! And yes, I AM a fanboy… Even though I only discovered you Saturday night. And read Elemental and Storm as fast as possible. NOW ONTO Fearless and Spark! (Can’t WAIT until Breathless since I’m a gay guy and LOVE paranormal/urban fantasy YA with LGBT characters.)

  80. can you please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please get them to sell the other elemental novellas in Australia I really want to read breathless I LOVE THESE BOOKS SO MUCH!!!!!

  81. Will there be a book based on Becca? I’ve read Storm and am really intrigued by her character. I have so many questions about her and was hoping there would be a book about her life after Storm…

  82. Hi, Kat! Right now, I don’t have plans for another book on Becca, but you never know what might happen in the future…

    • just off the top of my head, i never read the novellas because my book store never sold them but if this was in one of the novellas just tell me.
maybe you could right a book based around becca and quinn before the whole merrick brother ordeal and based it around becca’s relationship with drew

  83. Okay, this might seem like a really stupid question, but I’ve been obsessing over it since Chris explained the whole elemental thing to Becca in the first book.
How the heck are they all different elements? I mean, that woman would have to be TRYING to give birth to 4 full elementals–like, in a helicopter flying from point air to point fire to give birth to Nick and Gabriel. Maybe I’m taking the pentagram thing to seriously and it’s more of a… metaphor…? Are they test tube babies?
Again, sorry, this is probably really obvious to everyone else but I’ve been rereading certain parts of your books for about a year and I still don’t understand. If you would answer this I would be so, so relieved and happy and at peace.

  84. The download The Debt DVD rip which is still standing
is an oddity. Have you played any gigs around town, any house parties, any school dances.
Just when your swelling goes down somewhat responding towards the diuretic does
not necessarily mean you are receiving better.

  85. Do you know if your books will be available in audio? I have read everyone of them and enjoyed the very much. I would love to be able to get them on Audible also. Just finished Secret and can’t wait for Michael’s book.

  86. Hi,

I love the Elemental series, and I love the Merrick brothers, especially Gabriel. Just out of curiosity – who’s the older twin? Nick or Gabriel?

(I’m sorry if it has been mentioned in the books, but I’ve scrolled it from back to front, and I can’t seem to find anything on it)…

  87. I just finished reading ‘Secret’. The fourth book. Let be just say “AWESOME X10000”. I think I loved it more that the previous one. But when I finished the book, I checked the cover once again. And the guy on the cover with the girl (Quinn, I suppose?) is supposed to be Nick, right? But he doesn’t look same as the guy you said was Nick/Gabriel on the Storm/Spark cover?
Left me really really confused. So was the guy on the ‘Secret’ cover Adam? Or Nick?

  88. Is there a Tv Series ?? If so is there a website i can go to so that i can find out the name of the official tv series i love your books

  89. I really just want to say. I wish The Elemental series NEVER had to end im a Gabriel and Hunter fan.

Just curious how much Hunter will be in Sacrifice ?
I LOVED Spirit made me cry like a baby. So glad to finally have Hunters story but wow so sad poor kid puts up with a lot.

Also id LOVE if u did that spin of series with new characters but same world.

But id LOVE more if u could add more books into the Merrick stories haha i just really dont want to say goodbye to the characters.

Ur an AMAZING author. Ur stories have soo much meaning to them and really play on our emotions in a good way.

  90. I just finished Secret and may I just say….
    OMG!!
I couldn’t put it down. I didn’t even want to sleep coz it meant I had to stop reading.
I am officially counting down the days until Sacrifice is released!!!
but I seriously can’t believe that Sacrifice will be the last book!! Is there any chance at all that you could write another one after Sacrifice??

  91. Hey Brigid,
I was wondering if you’re going to be writing any new books after the Elemental Series is finished.
I’m not rushing or anything, but I like your books and the way they’re written.
    Sincerely,
    Claudia

  92. Heyyyyyyyy I love your books. Amazing series. Just a quick question, will Hunter get another girl? It was so sad when Kate died πŸ™

    • i was on the verge of tears but i didn’t cry because mum was sitting right next to me and trust me, that is not something you want to talk about near the end of a car trip.

  93. Hey. I was just wondering, are you going to be making these books into movies? I really love the series and I just really want to see the books visually. I would also like to know, what gave you the idea of making these books and using all the elements?
Thank you for making amazing books for your fans to read. Please make it into a movie of some sort or something.
If you read this and reply….OMG!!! I WILL FANGIRL hehe Bye now!

  94. hello, i was wondering if the elementals will have a movie because i know that a lot of people would watch it and i really want there to be a movie, pleeeeaase haha πŸ™‚

  95. I’m soory, I sounded so bored there but in real life I am dying, I can’t stop thinking about your books, I love every single one of the elementals and I didn’t want to sound weird and me and all my friends are absolutely in love with the elementals series and we would see the movie sooooo many times.

I had a look… actually no, I stared at your fantasy cast for storm and thought they were very good actors apart from Chris and Hunter.

Chris because I don’t actually know, just that I feel like the man on the front cover fit his charater more, now I don’t know if this is because I am used to him like this or another reason but I love him either way.

Now, Hunter i agree with you, he needs to have darker hair because at the moment you cant even tell that he has that white lovely strip down his hair but this is easily fixed and he can get fakes for the movie so that will be okay haha but the same as Chris, I love Hunter either way.

I am just goining on and on and I’m honestly sorry and I should stop now but you are the person who inspired me to read and I knnow this sounds weird but you are, before I read the elementals, i hated books, I wouldn’t go near the library but now I search for good books like yours. (so far I haven’t found a book as good or better than elementals.

  96. hey i’m writing a book based around this girl called Artemis whose mum died a year ago and when she goes on a field trip to museum she find a Jade necklace which belonged to an ancestor from unrecorded history and no one else can see it until she puts it on so she does so and when she does she discovers her ancestor who was also called Artemis was the one of the greatest assassin’s of history, so she gains these killing skills and discovers this culture of assassin’s who want to take over the world, it’s going to be a three book series and there is to be a lot of drama in it as she is a teenager
but what i’m struggling with is doing a good job, i’ll read over it and fix it up where there’s mistake but is there any pointers you could give me because i want to make sure i’m giving people the full effect just like you do in your books which are amazing and they’re the best books I’ve ever read.
you have completely nailed teenage culture and Nick and Adam’s relationship is the best one yet.

  97. by the way, Nina Dobrev would be perfect for becca and i think candice accola would be an okay quinn but i also think that hayden panittere would be okay too.

  98. Hi Brigid, if i may call you that…? I really love your work i hope that one day i can become a great writer like you. which is something i haven’t really told anyone because it’s really awkward for me when people are like “Hey can i read what you wrote? No? That’s to bad im going to anyway.” I want to ask you two things. First is how did you come up with Chris? Also, have you ever thought about doing another book about Chris? In case you haven’t noticed he happens to be my favorite character, i really like his cover model too! Thanks for reading and taking time out of your day for a complete stranger!

  99. OMG I love your series and personally love storm. Okay I got a question, which couple do you like best in the whole series it doesn’t even have to be a couple like say you liked hunter and becca together you could say them but I mean if you liked them together then you would probably put them together

  100. Hi, i just finished reading the 5th elementals book and i was devastated at how it ended for one of the main characters. Is this the end of the elementals series or will you be writing more about the merrick brothers as i feel it didnt have a proper ending. We dont no how it all turned out and i really would love to no. Thankyou i love your books.

  101. I absolutely love the Elemental series ad is currently stressing about being up to take my kids to school in 4 hours cos I couldnt put it down.
Please tell me Sacrifice wasnt the last book in that series? You have left it open for more stories to come.

  102. i just bought the first series of the elemental series and i must say you have talent! i couldn’t put the book down and finished it in less than three days πŸ™‚

  103. dear Brigid Kemmerer
i love you so much!!!! i’m being absolutly serious when i say i finished Sacrifice within 5 hrs.
i couldn’t put it down! I’ll admit, i would have liked gto have seen more nick and adam action and we didn’t see anything from Becca and Quinn nor Quinn and Tyler’s relationship. But i moreso wanted to see more of nick and adam because after i finished Secret i was dying to see how their relationship had played out after the whole coming out ordeal for Nick. but i was satisfied on how much Adam had to do with the story! i was worried that we weren’t going to see much of him after he said that he was going to see his mother but then we saw him in the hospital eating at Nick’s pretzels.
i was just imagining Nick cuddling up to adam while he ate from the pile of pretzels. i had to find it funny that calla was still making jokes just before she died.
i know you don’t plan on making anymore books for the elemental series but if you could, would you consider making another book based on each of the characters so we can get a little more insight on how they would be if they were normal and just to see how each of the couples have coped after the series.
with kind regards to you and your little baby zach
    ethan spice.
P.S. if you do decide on making a book or Novella based on each othe characters, could you make it that we see from each third person account from each couple inculding Quinn’s and Tyler’s.

  104. Hi, I’m a massive fan of the elementals series. But I just have one question. On the cover of my books, (they’re the ones with the coloured swirls) in real life, what is the name of the boy or boys who pose as Nick and Gabriel? They are just so hot. Big fan

  105. Do you know the names of the guys that are on the front cover of the books. BTW i loved all you books in the series and I was if you are going to write a sixth book in the series.

  106. Have you ever thought of putting your extra books into actual books? If so pleeeeease do it. I have finished all your books! I need more

  107. Will you write another book after Sacrifice i feel that the series is incomplete what happens next?
is there a possibility that hunter is alive?
Also why does Hunter never get a happy ending first Claire then Kate and now he’s possibly dead it just not fair.

  108. Hello, so I don’t know if you still reply to these questions, but I’ve always wanted to know this:
Gabriel is a senior and Layne is a sophomore. In Spark (pg2) it says that Gabriel was stuck in trigonometry with juniors then on pg17 (in Layne’s POV) “Spending half her classes with students two years ahead…”
Wouldn’t this mean that Layne is in senior math (I am aware that it says HALF her classes) while Gabriel is in junior math? Thanks, by the way, I’m a huge fan of the series, I can’t believe it’s finished!! :'(

  109. Is sacrifice really the last book what happen soany more questions
    1) does mike ever get custody
    2) what happens with the guides do all the new generation fithes join together and over power the people in charge
    3) what happens with the business what are they going to do for money

  110. I love your Elemental series. I have read three of your books and plan to read more. I looked kind of quickly through the comment posts so if this was asked forgive me. Is there a professional photo of Adam somewhere like they have for the covers and if not who would you choose to be him?

  111. hmm.. i like your book (Storm) very much, romance, action, element…. but i want ask something… i really want to watch the movie of that novel if it exists.

  112. Hey Brigid! I loved Storm and I’m still going out to buy the other books but I was just wondering if you had any plans on writing another book about Becca’s life and how she’s handling her powers, the fact that her father was the guide and everything because I did some research on what the second book was about and it said it was about Gabriel (I really loved him so I can’t wait to read it!). I don’t really know if the other books touched on the topic about Becca’s powers (if they did, I’m sorry for wasting your time :”) ahahaha) but I would really love to find out how she’s dealing with it as in Storm, she only found out about it but it was never really explored in depth? I don’t know if this sounds confusing (and stupid xD) or anything but I was just really intrigued by Becca and her finding that she was like the Merrick brothers.

I really loved Storm so I can’t wait to get the other books and read them :3. (P.S I’m an Aussie ahahahah just had to include it here as I read the previous comments xD)

  113. Hi! Breathless doesn’t seem to be available in the uk in amazon or iBooks and so I was wondering if you knew of anywhere else us could get it as I really love this series and Nick in particular. Thank you!

  114. Hey Brigid,

I was wondering if you deliberately made all the titles for the books start with ‘s’?

Except for the short story ones!!
    thanks a lot πŸ™‚

  115. Hi Brigid, if you have a chance will you make a movie? If you do could you also have Jennifer Lawrence play Layne or Hannah

    ~Samuel

    P.S Love the series!

  116. I just finished Sacrifice and I think I’m in a state of shock.
Please tell me there are more stories about the Merricks coming soon!
I mean, you left it open for more. Did you do that on purpose?

  117. Hey Brigid,
I just wanted to thank you for Secret!
It hit really close to home with a lot of stuff that Nick and Adam had to go through, and it highlighted a lot of the issues in the gay community that really need addressing. Thank you so much, and you’re such an amazing author!

    And now for the question:
If you had a choice, who would you cast as Adam?

And I know it’s cheating to ask another, but is there going to be a book 6 at all please?

    • I finished reading Secret in less than 2 days, it really resonated with me too. I also need to know – is there going to be a book 6? Please, pretty please πŸ™‚

  118. Ok, Hi! I just found your books like sixth months ago and I just finished it yesterday! I was wondering if there you are going to write another after Sacrifice? I really want you to because I was freaking out of the ending! I can’t be over!!!

  119. Ok, Hi! I just found your books like sixth months ago and I just finished it yesterday! I was wondering if there you are going to write another after Sacrifice? I really want you to because I was freaking out of the ending! I can’t be over!!!

  120. Why are you such a good writer, I wish I could write but I can never put I thoughts into words.
I am in love with Chris Merrick! and Hunter frustrates me. I am only half way through the first book but am in love with it! I love books and you are a writer I would love to read more books by.

  121. OK, i just read your elemental series and i think it is the best thing i have ever read!! My favorite character is totally Gabriel Merrick. I love his i don’t give a crap attitude and how he reacts to EVERYTHING! If you make a movie of it i will be first in line!!! He reminds me a lot about Raphael from The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!!

    • I’m in the UK, but now you mention it, I think I was in France when I first downloaded/read up until Spirit… I’ve just gone back to reread them hoping to get the last 2 as well πŸ™‚

  122. And if you are going to write more, would you think about putting in a sister to the Merrick brothers, one that Michael couldn’t get custody over?

  123. Hi Brigid,

I was wondering if there were any more books in the elemental series after Sacrifice?

    Kindest,

    Steven

  124. Will there be any other Elementals books after sacrifice? I know that right now every brother (plus Hunter) has their own book…so maybe Sacrifice was the end…but I’m hoping that it’s not!

    Thanks,

    Emily

  125. I’m 14 and I have read almost all of your books exept I’m reading the 5th one and I love these books. I have 2questions the first one is can you please make these books into movies, if you go onto youtube and type up the elementals storm trailer fanmade there is a pirson that has made a trailer that is magnificent and question 2 can you write storys continuing on with each books storys I hope you can answer my questions.

  126. I just finished reading Sacrifice. I really love the series and I would love to know more especially about the Merrick brothers since they were hardly in Sacrifice beside Michael. Also I really hope there’s going to be a book in Tyler’s point of view. No words can express how I love this series, it’s probably my favorite series now but I really hope there’s more and it doesn’t end there. I’m so glad I found the first book, as soon as I read it I knew I would love it and not many people can do that so thank you Brigid Kemmerer for writing such amazing books!

  127. Hi. My friend showed my the Storm and the Spark. And I already read the Storm, now im reading the Spark and I love it. But unfortunaly (so far) these two books are in my language(Hungarian), or i just didnt find it yet. IΒ΄m going to read them in English if i dont find them soon πŸ˜€

So my question would be :
Who are the guys on the covers? Do you have the names or? Do you know them?
(Sorry English is not my first language, but IΒ΄m working on it)

  128. Hi I’m a fan of your series I have two questions why would hunter die if he had his own book and he was a main character and will there be a sixth book there was so much left unresolved

  129. Will the books ever become a movie? Just asking because I’m obsessed with them and for some reason when ever I finish the books I find myself lost in them againπŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

  130. So heres my comment(s)
    1) I LOVED YOUR BOOKS!!!!!!!
    2) what is the overall hardest part to being an author. Was it hard getting your first book published?
    3) when did you first know you wanted to be an author?
    4) I LOVED YOUR BOOKS!!!!!!! (I think I already said that)
    5) It’s funny, when I first saw your picture you looked like my friend at school. And strange enough, she also loves horses and books

  131. to be honest I am so confused about the books order
I started from Storm (and after like 5 chapters I ran to check fancasts and I discovered Elemental)
I can read them afterwards, right?
and like come on how can someone be angry with Gabriel he such a small bean

  132. Will you continue writing on the 6 book in the Elemental series (Strife)? I already read the small extraczion you posted on Facebook and it’s great.

  133. I have read your books in it’s order and am now up to Sacrifice. I didn’t read the Novella’s though. Before I read Sacrifice, I want to re-read the whole series again. Does Sacrifice need previous knowledge from the other books, or can I jusr start reading it without re-reading the others? I love them by the way!!

  134. Hello Brigid. I know there is almost no chance you’re still reading these comments, but I still have to ask.

After having read all of the novels, I am left confused as to the extent of Fifths abilitites. From representational manifestation (I.E. Hunters stones and their properties) to control over the elements and elemental amplification, it’s just a bit… everywhere.

Would you say that the characteristic of unpredictability is a defining characteristic of the fifths? And then you throw in people being drawn to them and it becomes even more muddled.

So I guess my real question would be, from a nerd perspective: What exactly are the powers of a Fifth?

    • i’m no Brigid, but i think many will agree with me on this that the powers of a fifth are can be likened to or are basically that of Avatar e.g Avatar Aang. Since like the avatar they control all elements, can amplify them, and can control just pure energy.

  135. okay just stumpled upon this. First of all The Elemental series, has been my best novel series ever since i read the raintree series, its just exquisite.
I have read all the releases more than twice and each time i think it grows more satisfactorily, toe tingly, exciting.
But i have to ask, after #Sacrifice, it just seems like there should be a final closing book, so i wanna ask should your readers be expectant of this or we should just create the fantasy of it in our heads πŸ™‚

  136. Hi Brigid,
Your books are really interesting that i am using it for a personal response but i am having some difficulty, can you tell me the meaning behind the elemental series, please? it would be an honor to know what your perspective of the stories are.

  137. I absolutely love this series… it is my life… I was wondering… how long did it take you to write the books? And did you evrr want the characters to be real? I love you so

  138. I was wondering if here are any other books coming out that are just about Becca and Chris? I love this couple so much! STORM is my favourite book out of the whole series!
